Aims and Activities

Mission Statement: To make research, conservation and education the foundation of our work by harnessing the strengths of our membership to promote these goals.

Main aims:

  • Researching and monitoring bat populations in the County.
  • Supporting bat conservation e.g. installing bat boxes, surveying sites, attending local bio-festivals and supporting the police wildlife crime unit.
  • Providing opportunities for members of the public to engage with bats through our walks and talks sessions.
  • Supporting local enthusiasts through membership of the Bat group.

If your organisation would like a bat walk or talk on bats, please contact us and we will provide a speaker if we have a volunteer in your area.

We work closely with many other conservation organisations, such as Natural England, The Bat Conservation Trust (BCT) and Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust. Many of our members are also involved in the National Bat Monitoring Program.

Please note however that the bat group does not carry out any form of professional survey work, and is not able to assist with issues related to planning or development. For information related to bats and planning please contact the Bat Conservation Trust or Natural England.

Membership

If you’re interested in bats, and want to become more involved, please check out our Membership page or Frequently Asked Questions.

Training

We no longer have a formal system for training Volunteer Bat Roost Volunteers (VBRV) within Gloucestershire. However, bat group members interested in working towards their licence can build up a log of their experience by attending bat group events to help support their application.
